Militanter Feminismus Kongress verschoben – unsere ersten Gedanken zur aktuellen Situation

** english version below **

Liebe Freund*innen,

Militant Feminism Congress postponed – our first thoughts on the current situation

Dear friends,

On Saturday 14.03.20 we decided to postpone the Militant Feminism Congress at the end of March. It became clear to us that it could not have taken place as planned under the current circumstances. We think that this congress fits into current struggles and can provide important impulses on the question „How to go on?“. During the planning of the congress we have received an incredible amount of positive feedback and have experienced people’s own initiative. We were very pleased about this and have been motivated time and again. Because it shows us all the more how much we wanted to do this congress with you, to develop together with you in our analyses and practices. Therefore we will definitely let it take place at a later date.

Why postponed?

We believe that the congress makes an important contribution to current discussions. It is important to us to allow all people who share these interests to participate. This is currently not possible due to various circumstances: Due to the closing of various borders it is clear that international guests would have had great difficulties arriving. Also people from, and in contact with risk groups had already cancelled. We assume that further cancellations for various reasons would have followed this week. We all find it difficult to assess the situation at the moment. We cannot foresee the risk of Covid 19 and the possible health consequences of a congress with many people in common rooms. We are also not prepared to deal with the many new and daily changing rules and regulations. The repressive consequences for the participants cannot be assessed at present. We do not know what developments will take place next week, whether there will be more official restrictions and how these will be monitored.

Further initial thoughts on the current situation

The threat of the virus and the restrictive measures introduced represent a considerable cut in our lives. It is important that we discuss the political dimension of this, that we assess the situation and that we continue to monitor it. That is why we also believe that it is good and important that people continue to meet in spite of this and for this very reason. We want to be aware of the fears and uncertainties that exist at the moment and take them seriously. In relation to the virus and in relation to the measures and social developments that go along with it. We think it is important to remain attentive and to look at what is happening in terms of repression by state organs and what is being normalising socially, such as the sealing off at the borders. Very quickly rights are restricted and a mood is created in the media that provides legitimacy for these blatant restrictions. The current developments can lead to a worsening of conditions on a racist, patriarchal and capitalist level. Forces will shift and reposition themselves. We too must strengthen and hold together. We see neither the expansion of individualism and isolation nor a national community of solidarity as a legitimate means of reacting to this situation! We must not forget that it is not the virus per se but the structures of power that are responsible for the extent of the „crisis“. These power structures must be abolished in order to improve all our lives!

„The city stands still.“ We hear this sentence often these days. But the repressive organs do not stand still, evictions continue, as is currently the case in Athens. We assume that they will continue. Nor do the running costs of many precarious people who have suddenly lost access to wages but still have to pay rent and bills. Nor does the work of those who cannot simply give up their job and who are now burdened by the situation on several occasions stand still. Nor does the racist violence at the borders, which continues to isolate, hurt and kill people, stand still. The trans-enemy, racist and sexist attacks on the street and „at home“ do not stand still. In prison and all other confining institutions the social possibilities are restricted and this leaves people in prison often alone with their situation. It becomes clear again that the freedom of movement and health of some is more important than that of others.

We do not want a trend towards social isolation and voluntary self-locking. We see our social responsibility not in isolating ourselves but in resisting together and continuing to stand up for the freedom of all. We continue to meet, albeit in an adapted form, because we ourselves are also uncertain about the effects of the virus. For example, we now meet outside during the day (because the sun is still shining) and in small groups with enough space between us, do not hug each other and follow hygiene recommendations. We find it important to support each other in our different ways of being affected, to talk about our fears, to ask each other what we just need (from each other) and also to discuss ideas to minimise the risk of infection. But also our economic, political and social fears and the challenges they pose. The danger in this „crisis“ is also that individual solutions are completely relied upon. The solution is not that we isolate and socially distance ourselves, but that we take care of each other. Our strength is not that we have power, but that we are many. The expression and means of our struggles are made more difficult by the restriction of social spaces. How can we react to this? How can we continue to resist? Because it remains necessary. It is definitely not enough to come together in digital spaces. Especially militant struggles usually cannot be moved to the internet.

In addition to the call for „social distancing“ and haording for the nuclear family, we can currently also observe that people under the new conditions collectively organise themselves in eg. their neighborhoods. They are not waiting for the state to organise their everyday life. This can mean an opportunity to expand collectivity, the self-organisation and solidarity that we live in our struggles. Only for us this is not limited to the time determined by Corona.

We fight for solidarity instead of domination, before, during and after Corona. The security discourse is currently shifting to the extreme and seems to make emancipatory and expressions of Freedom more difficult. Therefore we hope for further discussions and militant feminist analyses and actions on the current situation!

The problem remains to be racism, capitalism and patriarchy.
